SUMMARY:Stew Crew
DESCRIPTION:The current snow cover gives us a great opportunity to safely burn some brush piles. We’ll be burning the pile that’s built up over the year at the Thoma Preserve. While the pile burns down\, we can add to it by carrying previously cut brush from other smaller piles. Because it’ll be chilly in the morning\, but looks to warm up throughout the day\, this event will be planned for 1 pm instead of our usual start time of 9! \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: CLCF’s Thoma Preserve from 1-3 PM on Thursday\, December 11. Parking is available at the corner of Birchview Rd and County Highway Z\, West Bend\, WI 53095. Because this area is in the road right-of-way\, it is not plowed\, so please feel free to park along the road shoulder on Birchview Rd as well. \n\n\n\nBring: Because we will be burning\, please wear natural fibers (denim\, wool\, cotton) as your outer layer! Synthetic fibers and synthetic blends such as nylon or polyester will melt if any embers land on them. I’d also recommend taller boots or gaiters to keep the snow out. All this snow is great for skiing\, not so much for off-trail hiking! \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact CLCF Stewardship Coordinator\, Sarah\, at smoore@theclcf.org.

SUMMARY:Stew Crew
DESCRIPTION:This week\, Stew Crew will be removing Japanese Barberry\, an invasive shrub\, from the Wiebrecht Property. Japanese Barberry can be spotted by its spiny stems\, bright red berries\, and tiny spoon-shaped leaves. The spiny stems make it easy to ID this time of year\, and most of the plants growing in this population will be small enough to cut with hand pruners. \n\n\n\nWe will be cutting these small shrubs off at the base and treating the stumps with an herbicide to prevent resprouts. The Wiebrecht Property has very little Buckthorn and Honeysuckle\, so preventing the Barberry from getting a hold here is a huge step for this property. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen & Where: CLCF’s Wiebrecht Property on Thursday\, January 8 from 9-11 AM. Parking for this property is on the road shoulder along Oak Lodge Rd\, just south of its intersection with German Village Rd\, West Bend WI 53095. Map below. \n\n\n\nBring: Some thick work gloves. If you have a tear-resistant coat (basically anything other than a puffer jacket) this would be a great week to wear it. If you have a favorite pair of hand pruners or loppers\, feel free to bring them along. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact CLCF Stewardship Manager\, Sarah\, at smoore@theclcf.org.

SUMMARY:Stew Crew
DESCRIPTION:This workday will consist of cutting and treating the stems of this shrubby invasive species. The stems are usually tiny enough that you can use hand clippers\, but loppers work well for their added reach. Last time\, we found it was even possible to pull some of these plants out entirely by the roots! If you’ve never been to a Stew Crew before\, this will be a great one to learn a new species\, get some fresh air\, and hear the chickadees calling.  \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: Thursday\, February 12\, from 9 to 11 AM at the Wiebrecht property. Parking is available on the shoulder of Oak Lodge Rd\, just past the intersection with German Village Rd\, West Bend WI 53095. \n\n\n\nBring: A pair of work gloves (thick leather gloves will work well\, barberry stems are prickly). If you have a favorite pair of loppers or clippers\, feel free to bring them along but we will provide these as well.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact CLCF Stewardship Manager\, Sarah\, at smoore@theclcf.org.

SUMMARY:Stew Crew
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to spring. We have an interesting window of time before Garlic Mustard comes up and after treating Buckthorn becomes ineffective due to sap flow going up towards the buds in preparation for the growing season. So\, it is the perfect time to focus on our tree plantings with a little tree tube maintenance!  \n\n\n\nThis workday will consist of removing some tubes on trees in the back field of Timmers\, as well as re-attaching zip ties or pounding in stakes. It is also helpful to slightly lift up the tubes and brush out any leaf debris that accumulates\, in order to give the smaller trees their best shot at growth this spring and summer.  \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: The CLCF Timmers Property\, on Thursday March 26th from 9-11 AM. Please park along the road shoulder on Timmers Bay Rd\, West Bend WI 53095. See map below. \n\n\n\n(Property is just east of 5151 Timmers Bay Rd\, West Bend WI 53095 if you need an address reference point for a GPS).\n\n\n\nBring: A pair of work gloves. A box cutter or pocketknife may be helpful when removing the tree tubes as well! \n\n\n\nFor more information\, contact CLCF Stewardship Manager\, Sarah\, at smoore@theclcf.org.

SUMMARY:David Mickelson: Geology of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now closed. This event has reached capacity. We encourage you to check out CLCF’s other upcoming events. \n\n\n\nCLCF’s Nature Series sponsored by the Ziegler Family Foundation in Memory of R.D. Ziegler is excited to host David Mickelson\, Emeritus Professor of Geoscience\, Geological Engineering\, and Water Resources Management at UW–Madison. \n\n\n\nSouthwestern Wisconsin\, the Driftless Area\, was never glaciated and its deep valleys and narrow ridges result from millions of years of stream erosion. About 25\,000 years ago glaciers covered more than two thirds of what is now Wisconsin\, creating the glacial landforms we see today. The 1000-mile trail across Wisconsin highlights many of these Ice Age features. This talk will explain the formation of moraines\, kettles\, outwash plains\, drumlins\, eskers\, and tunnel channels using slides of modern glaciers as well as many photos and maps from Wisconsin.

SUMMARY:Stew Crew
DESCRIPTION:This will likely be our last workday doing tree planting maintenance at CLCF Timmers! The front and back fields are done and now we just have the middle section to fix up tree tubes on these young trees. \n\n\n\nThe morning will consist of re-attaching tubes to stakes\, brushing out any debris that has accumulated in the base of the tree tube\, or hammering in stakes that have gotten wobbly over the winter. I’ll bring some more new stakes and tubes for any trees we come across that are missing one.  \n\n\n\nWhen & Where: Thursday April 23rd from 9-11 AM at CLCF’s Timmers Property. Park along the road shoulder on Timmers Bay Rd\, West Bend WI 53095. SUMMARY:Walk & Talk: The Weninger Property
DESCRIPTION:SAVE THE DATE! Join CLCF and Washington County Conservation Staff for a guided walk through CLCF’s Weninger Property. Get a firsthand look at and learn all about the newly constructed berms on the property\, also known as Water and Sediment Control Basins (WASCOBs). \n\n\n\nThe berms are raised mounds of earth with a drainage system that run perpendicular to the slope. They slow down and temporarily store water as it flows downhill during rain events\, which allows sediment to settle before the clean water is gradually released through underground outlets. The implementation of these berms was funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Environmental Quality Incentives Program\, after the property was purchased in August 2024\, with funding from Washington County’s Conservation and Heritage Grant Program and CLCF supporters. \n\n\n\nCLCF’s Nature Series is sponsored by the Ziegler Family Foundation in Memory of R.D. Ziegler.
