Our native oak trees are extremely important components of Wisconsin’s ecosystems. They support life in all its forms, from birds and insects to squirrels and deer. This presentation will cover some of these interactions as well as Michael’s experiences with growing oak trees over the past 45 years. His intentions with this talk are to get everyone excited about oaks to the point where they will notice them and pick up some acorns in the fall, and maybe even grow some for fun and the future!
Michael owns and runs JN Plant Selections, LLC, a new plant development company that works to improve woody ornamental plants with an emphasis on tough, hardy materials for cold regions of the world.
Michael graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He learned many of his propagation and plant selection skills while working with the late Herbert F. Trautman of Trautman Nurseries in Franksville, Wisconsin in the late 1970’s. Michael Yanny was the plant propagator at Johnson’s Nursery, Inc. in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin from 1980 to 2010. He was the Senior Horticulturist on Johnson’s staff from 2011 through 2016.
