This Thursday we will be in the Mueller prairie, holding the line against some rapidly spreading Sumac. While not invasive, it can easily take over the prairie and shade out other species. We will be using the trail as our dividing line, and clearing the small amount of Sumac that has hopped this barrier. The trails could also use some attention here, so we will be cutting back some of the branches that are crowding the sides of the path as well.
If there’s extra time, we can also begin to work on removing some of the woody invasives in the prairie- all our usual offenders of Buckthorn, Honeysuckle, and Autumn Olive are present. The great news is that there is very little Wild Parsnip (another invasive) in the prairie, following the past few years of hard work by Stew Crew and other volunteers! If we come across any, I’ll have a few bags so we can dispose of seedheads.
Bring: Long sleeves, long pants, and a pair of work gloves. We will provide loppers. There is some poison ivy at this site, mostly along trail edges, so the long sleeves are highly recommended.
When and Where: Thursday, August 14, from 9-11 AM at the Mueller Prairie. Park along Mueller Ln across from 4831 Mueller Ln, West Bend, WI 53095. Please park on CLCF’s side if possible, to avoid anyone’s lawn. See map below.
